Fish papers, 1851-1963 (bulk 1870-1940).

Reminiscences, manuscripts, correspondence, business records, and legal documents relating to the Fish family, and to Robert's involvement in civic affairs in Tucson. There are manuscript histories and personal reminiscences including biographies of Maria Wakefield Fish and a Fish genealogy compiled by Roberts. Also present are account ledgers, receipts, deeds and legal documents of E.N. and Maria Fish. One file of women's organization materials includes correspondence, minutes, membership lists, and more. There are three pages of brief minutes from the Women's Christian Temperance Union meetings, 1883-1893. Mining claims and business papers of William Lewis Wakefield, a brother of Maria Fish, 1900-1932, and letters to Don Alonzo Sanford, 1885-1895, are present. Ledgers, used as scrapbooks, from E.N. Fish's mercantile business include a daybook from Fort Mason, 1866-1867 (many entries are obscured by clippings).

Biographical note: Daughter of pioneer merchant Edward Nye Fish and pioneer educator Maria Wakefield Fish. Clara Fish, the first student to matriculate at the University of Arizona in 1891, was principal of Congress Street School and later taught at Flagstaff's Normal School. She married engineer Frederick C. Roberts in 1905. She was the first woman to serve on the Tucson School Board in 1923, and belonged to many women's and civic organizations.
